WHAT is REKO (rejal konsumtion)?
REKO, which translates to “real or sincere consumption”, is a local food trade model that began in Finland in 2013. It grew to be remarkably successful across Europe and is now becoming popular in the US. Simply, the REKO model uses Facebook as a platform for consumers to directly connect with and order from local farmers and food producers.
Twin Ports REKO producers offer a variety of fresh, locally grown items (seasonal herbs and vegetables, fruits, wild rice, honey, eggs, meat, flowers and plant starts) as well as locally made items (breads and bakery items, jams, coffee, fermented foods). This gives customers (you!) choice and convenience while still supporting local producers outside of farmers markets and CSAs.
WHO are we?
Our producers are local to Duluth/Superior and surrounding areas, typically located within a one hour drive.
Our producers only sell what they grow or produce.
Our producers are committed to using sustainable growing methods, and some even hold certificates for organic or biodynamic production methods.
Our producers take food safety seriously and follow all required safety standards.
HOW does it work?
Twin Ports REKO has a weekly ordering and pick-up cycle during the growing season; every other week in the off-season. Producers will post what they have to offer for the week beginning on Thursdays. The ordering window will close on Monday at midnight. Pick-up will be held on Wednesdays at the Ashley/FurnitureMart parking lot at StoneRidge shopping Center. Producers will be lined up, just drive on through and pick up your items directly from the producers. There are no on-site sales.
To ORDER:
Comment on a producer’s post with the items and quantity that you would like, for example “3 dozen eggs, 2 cucumbers, and 1 pound of carrots”. You must do this for each producer that you would like to order from. (Please only comment to order. If you have questions or other comments, please message the producer directly.)
The producers will contact you individually for payment details and payment confirmation. Our producers generally use Paypal or Venmo payment methods, but will communicate with you directly. All orders must be prepaid prior to pickup.
Simply pick up your orders on pick-up day!
BENEFITS OF REKO
Consumers have the flexibility and convenience to order from home (or wherever) and have a quick pick up time. They can get to know their producers and ask questions about their products. REKO is a great option for people who want to support local farmers and producers but don’t care for the hustle and bustle of the farmer’s market or the commitment to weekly CSA shares (many of our producers also offer these options too).
Producers know exactly what to harvest and pack for REKO pick-up. Producers retain more of the value in their products (no market fees or grocery cuts). Producers still get to have personal connections with their customers.
